2126 Pierce Street is a design/build project for a new house in Detroit. Located near the Eastern Market, the project is a dwelling for an under-housed family with children attending Campbell Elementary School and who are committed to living and growing in this neighborhood on Detroit's East Side. Initiated and realized by HousingOperative, 2126 Pierce Street offers a family a new home and a path toward revitalizing the community.
Founded in 2006, HousingOperative is a Detroit-based design/build agency dedicated to the realization of architecture for social and cultural change. We believe that the positive force of building - and building well - can lead to new ways of living and new ways of practice. What began as our thesis at Cranbrook Academy of Art is now under construction, the first new single-family residence this neighborhood has seen in more than 80 years, and will be completed this fall.
Housing Operative is a Detroit based design agency dedicated to the realization of architecture for social and cultural change. We believe that the positive force of building - and building well - can lead to a re-immersion and re-emergence, in search of new ways of practice and new ways of living. Ultimately, architecture is an act of engagement with people, connectivity through means and material and ideas that are brought together at a specific place and time, for the betterment of ourselves and contemporary society.
It is no longer enough to concentrate solely on tectonics or aesthetics, or the ruthless demands of the capital markets. The imperative exists to move toward a more full and inclusive activist approach to design for private life in the public realm, an architecture shaped by the demands of human existence.
